Ian Bretman has worked extensively with voluntary standards initiatives tackling sustainability issues. He played a central role in establishing the Fairtrade concept in the consumer marketplace for products like coffee, chocolate, bananas and cotton, and then helping the organisation scale-up its work in standard-setting, certification and support services.
Ian stepped back from full-time work with Fairtrade in 2012 but remained engaged as a member of their global board until 2021. He has also chaired a Citizens Advice service in North London, championed public engagement and equality & diversity as a Lay Member of an NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and served on the boards of Timewise Foundation and the Social Enterprise Mark. Ian has also provided consultancy support on strategy and governance to multi-stakeholder and ethical assurance organisations around the world.
